What is actually happening

A customer looking up a local business on her phone, the moment that decides whether you get recommended by ChatGPT.

A customer asks for the best option near them. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's own AI results do not hand back a page of links. They hand back a short answer. It names a few businesses and says one sentence about each.

That sentence already exists for your business. Nobody wrote it on purpose. It got pieced together from whatever was easy to find. That means your Google Business Profile, your website, the directories carrying your name, and the words your customers used in their reviews. The pieces that matched each other are the ones that stuck.

Why this matters to a local owner

Search used to send people to your website. You did the selling there yourself. Now they compare you before they click. The customer shows up with a name already picked.

You are not losing this on quality. You lose it when nothing about your work is written down where a machine can read it. A business with years of word of mouth and a full schedule can still give these tools nothing to repeat. A newer competitor who wrote a few clear pages about their services gets named instead. Neither owner ever finds out why.

Implementation Blueprint: how to get recommended by ChatGPT

Quick Win, today or this week

Answer the first question: what is being said right now. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Ask each one the question a customer would ask. That question is who is the best [what you do] in [your town]. Do not ask about your business by name. Ask by name and it will just say nice things about you.

Save every reply in one document with today's date. Note whether you were named and what was said about you. Keep that document. It is what you compare against next month.

Medium, one to two weeks

Answer the second question: where did that description come from. Ask each tool to name the sources behind its answer. Open those sources and compare what they say to what is true.

Fix your Google Business Profile first. Check the hours. List every service as its own item. Pick the right categories. Add photos from this year. Write the description in the words your customers use.

Then make your own website say plainly what you do, who you do it for, and the towns you serve. Then fix any directory still carrying an old phone number or an address you moved out of.

Full Strategy, this month or quarter

Answer the third question: what changes first. Write one page for each question customers ask before they buy. Put the answer right under the heading, before anything else.

Ask for reviews that name the service someone came in for. Those exact words get repeated back in the answer. A review that says great service gives these tools nothing to use.

Then put the same three questions on your calendar for the first of every month. Word them the same way each time and file them in the same document.

What to measure

How this works in your industry

If you run a salon or a service business

The question is almost never salon near me. It is a service, plus a hair or skin type, plus a town. List every service as its own item and say who it suits. Ask clients to name that service in their review. If your providers rent their own stations, start with the services list you do control.

If you run a vet clinic

Clients ask these questions late at night, worried, before they call anyone. Put your after hours policy on your site in plain sentences. Name the species you actually see. List the procedures you perform. Say plainly that you treat rabbits and guinea pigs, because that is what a worried owner types. Answering it fills the right appointments, not just the phone line.

If you bake or sell food

Guests ask for a dish, or for what they can eat. They do not ask for a restaurant. Put the dish name on your own site as real text. Include what is in it and what it is free of. A photo of the menu does not count. Say whether you take orders ahead. If you cater, publish your minimum, how much notice you need, and how far you deliver.

If you sell to dealers or B2B

Your buyer searches by the details and by what the product is for. Put those details on a page as real text, not only inside a PDF download. Name what it is made of and how long an order takes. A supplier whose details are only behind a contact form gives these tools nothing to repeat.

Tools and Resources

You can run the Quick Win yourself with the free version of each tool. The Recommendation Gap covers all three questions in one pass. It asks the buying questions on the tools your customers use. You get what is being said about your business today. You get the sources those answers came from, and the one to fix first.

It is $147, no call, and the payment link is on the page. See The Recommendation Gap.
